NHTSA Data Shows Increase in Illinois Truck Accident Deaths
Semi trucks are big…really big. When something that big is involved in an accident, the chances of severe personal injury or death increase dramatically. Truck accident injuries rank consistently as one of the most dangerous and debilitating types of wrongful injury, and according to new data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatalities caused by these accidents are rising.
In 2011, the most recent year with available data, 3,757 people died in car accidents involving large trucks, up from previous years. Illinois alone had more than 10,000 large truck accidents in 2011, and although this number represents less than four percent of all motor vehicle accidents, it accounted for nearly 10 percent of all motorist fatalities. Many long haul truck drivers spend hours and hours on the road at one time, and this lack of rest as well as the monotonous nature of the profession can lead to fatigue and errors leading to an accident. Other common causes of large truck accidents include impaired and distracted driving, vehicle maintenance issues, and environmental factors. Because of the sheer mass of these vehicles, it is much more likely that the driver or occupants of other vehicles will be injured or killed when they collide with a large truck, and their roads to recovery are not easy ones. The victims of large truck accidents often find themselves in need of months of care in order to fully recover, incurring medical bills, requiring rehabilitation and physical therapy, and relying on others for months on end. A truck accident lawsuit seeks compensation for the losses that a person might experiences following a car or truck accident, and can include anything from insurance costs, to lost wages, or pain and suffering. In some cases, our lawyers may also seek punitive damages, which are meant to hold wrongdoers accountable for their actions in the event of negligent or reckless behavior.
