It’s that time of year again. If your kids aren’t already in school, they will be soon, and in most cases that means getting picked up and dropped off by the bus everyday. As a parent, you expect that bus drivers and manufacturers will do their job to the best of their ability, and keep your child safe throughout the year. Unfortunately this isn’t always the case, and negligence on the part of just one person can put your kids and everyone else on the road in serious danger.
Early Monday morning, an 18-year-old pedestrian was injured after being hit by a bus in the northern suburb of Gurnee. The young woman, who was jogging at the time, suffered chest injuries, along with cuts and road rash, but was said to have been responsive while being transported to the hospital. “There was cause for concern initially,” said the responding Battalion Chief. “I don’t know if there are going to be surgeries needed, but she’s probably headed toward intensive care for a while.” Fortunately, the bus was not transporting any students at the time of the accident. The immediate area around the accident remained shut down through Monday morning for further investigation, but as of yet no charges have been filed. (Chicago Tribune)
According to data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 2001 and 2010, school bus accidents are more common than one might think. In the decade covered by the data, school transportation-related accidents resulted in a total of 1,368 fatalities, averaging out to about 137 per year. Like the statistics of many other types of accidents, the total number of fatalities is only the tip of the iceberg, and bus accidents injuries send more than 17,000 school-age (Under 19-years-old) individuals to the hospital annually as well. Operating a huge vehicle, such as a bus, is no easy task, but negligent behavior behind the wheel is one of the most common causes of bus accidents, and carelessness on the part of bus companies and manufacturers is just as dangerous.
