Seven Teens Hospitalized After One Car Rollover Accident in Hinsdale

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among 13-19 year-olds in the United States. Collectively, well over one-third of all deaths among this age group come inside a car. (RMIIA) Inexperienced drivers are much more likely to injure themselves and others on the road, and recent data shows that with more passengers, teens significantly increase the likelihood of these accidents. Unfortunately, if you read the news you probably know that teen driving accidents are all too common. Recently, our attorneys wrote an article about a 15-year-old killed while joyriding in Aurora with friends, but in more recent news, last Friday seven teens were hospitalized following an accident in Hinsdale.

Just before 8:00 p.m. Friday night, authorities responded to the accident. Hinsdale Police arrived on the scene to find only one car among the wreckage. According to the Chicago Tribune, the car was driven by a 16-year-old, and was carrying seven passengers when a sharp turn caused the car to roll, striking a tree.

All but one of the teens involved was taken to Hinsdale area hospitals for their injuries. Officials reported that they are continuing to investigate the facts and circumstances that may have contributed to the crash.

Under Illinois state law, a first-year driver under 18 may only have one passenger under the age of 20 who is not an immediate family member in their car while driving. Laws like these aim to curb troubling statistics, which show that teen drivers with more than one teen passenger are twice as likely to be in an accident than a drunk driver. (Drive SS)

The severity of teen driving injuries are further explained by other studies, such as those done by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, which found:
• Teen drivers and passengers are lease likely to wear seat belts, further increasing injuries from accidents.
• Cell phone use was highest among 16-24-year-olds, causing dangerous distractions.
• Teens are more likely to speed and not obey proper following distance guidelines, causing more rear end collisions.
• Almost 30% of 15-20-year-olds killed in crashes had a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher.

These are just some of the reasons why teen driving accidents result in nearly 300,000 hospital visits each year, and account for $26 billion in medical costs for those involved.

Our lawyers know that reckless driving accidents can be extremely traumatic no matter what the age of the driver.
