Driver in Fatal Chicago Drunk Driving Car Accident Sentenced to 10-Years in Prison

If you are a frequent reader of this blog you may know that the holiday season is especially hazardous when it comes to the alcohol-related car accidents. This time of year, get-togethers with friends and family are ubiquitous, and so is the alcohol that accompanies these celebrations. Nationwide drunk driving car accidents have been experiencing a steady decline, but with over 10,000 deaths (31% of all traffic related fatalities) still occurring annually, it remains a serious problem. Our lawyers want to remind you how incredibly important it is to drink responsibly and take measures both before and during outings in order to ensure that you don’t put yourself or anyone else at risk. Today, a local story reminds us just how devastating choosing to do otherwise can be. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

In a case stemming from a January 26th drunk driving accident, a Chicago-area woman was sentenced to 10 years in prison for reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident on Tuesday. The incident in question occurred near the 3800 block of West 87th Street, and resulted in the deaths of a father of three and his girlfriend, who where changing a tire on the side of the road. According to court reports, the woman did not have a valid driver’s license, and was operating her vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit at the time of the crash. Statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation state that over 1.2 million drivers are arrested every year in our country for choosing to get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. In cases like these, no matter what the outcome may be, everyone loses. Yesterday’s ruling reminds us that one person’s negligence and carelessness can mean children growing up without their father or mother, or a family losing a loved one.
