The tremendous size of semi-trucks makes them ideal for hauling heavy loads of freight and materials all across our country. These vehicles help us deliver many of the goods that we take for granted in our day-to-day lives, and more than $600 billion dollars moves through this industry every year, so they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Even so, the enormous weight and incredible momentum carried by semi-trucks can prove extremely dangerous in the event of an accident. Statistics show that an astonishing 98% of all fatalities in trucking accidents are occupants of passenger vehicles, which goes to show just how powerful these tractor-trailers really are. Sunday afternoon, four women had to be taken to a Salem, Illinois hospital following an accident involving a semi tractor-trailer. Authorities say that the accident occurred just before 2:00pm around milepost 125 of the I-57 freeway. The Illinois State Police report indicates that the car’s driver was sleep deprived at the time of the incident, which caused her to lose control of the steering wheel and swerve into the semi-truck occupying the right lane. This caused the front end of the vehicle to become lodged underneath the trailer of the semi, injuring the driver and three of her passengers. (The Tribune Star)
Approximately 130,000 individuals are injured in trucking accidents every year. For these people, an accident can mean taking on huge medical bills, and even losing the ability to work and produce income for themselves and their families over an extended period of time. 90% of all trucking accidents are caused or worsened by some kind of human error, so if you have been the victim of an accident, you might be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, insurance costs, and damages associated with your collision. Truck accident law can be intimidating to navigate, so it is essential that you have an experienced legal team on your side. Over the years, our lawyers have represented many clients in semi-truck lawsuits. In one such case, we were contacted by the family of a 32-year-old woman who was killed after their pick-up truck was rear-ended by a semi-truck that failed to use proper caution. Our client and his son were both seriously injured in the crash as well. Our team was able to prove that the defendant was under the influence while driving, and was operating an overloaded and unsafe truck. Additionally, in violation of federal regulations, the defendant truck owners had failed to perform background checks of drug screenings on their drivers prior to employment. We were able to secure a $6.5 million settlement for the family, giving them the money that they needed to pay their medical bills and cover final expenses for their loved one.
The above is just one example of how the legal system can help victims achieve justice for the harms caused to them by driver negligence. Accidents can happen anywhere and to anyone, but you can rest assured knowing our lawyers will be there to help you if you need it.
