8 Children Injured in Illinois Bus Accident

Living in the Midwest, the threat of a weather related winter car accident is a very real concern. Snow, sleet, freezing rain, ice, and many other common types of winter weather can wreak havoc on roads, and with 70% of the United States population living within snowy regions, this issue has the potential to affect millions of drivers every year. The Illinois Valley received roughly 8 inches of snow last weekend alone, and this constant coat of powder had local plows and salt trucks scrambling to keep the roads safe. While many people experienced difficulties, the most serious incident of the weekend saw a school bus crash in Putnam County.

According to reports from local police, the bus was transporting a group of school children from Rich Township School District when if slid off of Route 18 navigating an S-curve in the road near Wolf Hollow. EMS paramedics and ambulances were called from Wyanet, Mendota, and Oglesby to assist the 18 students involved in the bus accident. In total, 8 children were injured, with 2 suffering semi-serious injuries, however none of the occupant’s conditions were considered life threatening. The 8 students were taken to St. Margaret’s Hospital in nearby Spring Valley, and all were released by approximately 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. (Illinois Valley News Tribune)

This was by no means the only incident of the weekend, as Illinois State Police reported responding to 16 accidents and 19 motorist requests for assistance during the period from Friday night to Sunday. Local towing companies also reported a large spike in calls for assistance. Many of these accidents are due to the weather, however, it is every driver’s responsibility to take the proper precautions when facing adverse road conditions. In other words, when someone is negligent or reckless during the winter season, they shouldn’t be able to get away with just blaming an accident on the weather.
