The number of cars on the road in the United States is growing every year, and as a result car accidents have become an all too common sight for many drivers. Over 6 million car accidents occur in this country every year, leaving thousands of people dead and millions injured. Over the weekend, a car accident in Chicago on the Kennedy Expressway left four people injured, and three in critical condition.
According to Illinois State Police, the cars where near the Jackson Boulevard exit of the Kennedy Expressway when they collided. Three of the people involved were rushed to local hospitals in critical condition, and the fourth in serious condition. The accident initiated an EMS Plan 1, which under serious circumstances sends at least five ambulances to the scene of an accident. (Chicago Sun Times)
We seem to read about car accidents every time we open our morning paper, but many of these accidents are easily avoidable. In 2010 alone, nearly half a million people were injured due to a distracted driver. Distracted driving includes activities like texting while driving, eating or drinking, or surfing the web on your smartphone. These types of negligent accidents leave hundreds of thousands of people hospitalized every year, and can require substantial amounts of time to recover. Many of these victims are unable to work and earn income, and are left with accumulating medical bills and no way to pay them. (Distraction.gov)
Reckless driving is another cause of many car accidents. Speeding, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are two of the most common types of reckless driving accidents. Speeding-related accidents accounted for $40.4 billion in economic costs last year, and alcohol-related fatalities contributed to 1/3rd of all crash fatalities. (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration)
Distracted drivers are one of the main reasons why over 2.5 million rear end collisions, and 70,000 accidents involving pedestrians occur every year, and the list goes on and on.
