Our Chicago accident attorneys know that drunk driving is one of the biggest problems in the United States today. Over 1.41 million drivers were arrested last year for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, and every day about 27 people die at the hands of these drunk drivers. Accidents caused by the recklessness of drunk drivers have left millions of Americans with traumatic and permanent injuries, which they and their family will have to deal with for the rest of their lives. Yesterday, the City of Chicago’s Finance committee endorsed the payment of $6.25 million in compensation to a man who experienced brain damage and permanent disability as the result of reckless actions by a drunken city worker. The full council will meet again on Wednesday, and are expected to vote to approve the settlement.
According to police reports, the city worker in question was driving his city pickup truck with a blood alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit when he jumped a curb and rammed his truck into a crowd gathered on a Gold Coast sidewalk, leaving many people severely injured. The city worker pled guilty to four counts of aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol, and is now serving a 9-year prison sentence. (Chicago Tribune)
Wednesday’s vote may be the first of many lawsuit related compensation packages in response to the May 2011 accident. Our attorneys are very familiar with this accident and represent one of the victims in the accident and his wife. Follow this link to read about their accident.
The fact that the Chicago man’s brain damage has left him unable to return to his job as a computer scientist, and that his family has already spent nearly $600,000 in medical expenses were among many reasons cited by the Finance Committee justifying their endorsement.
Our lawyers know that the cost of drunk driving injuries can be far beyond the normal families ability to pay. Last year, the estimated cost of these injuries to Americans was an estimated $132 billion. In many cases, such as the one above, people who fall victim to drunk drivers are left without the ability to ever regain a normal life, and have no way of providing for themselves or their medical bills. In addition to representing victims of this accident, our lawyers have fought for many families and clients, and have been successful in providing them with the compensation they need to no longer worry about paying their mounting medical bills. Recently our attorneys achieved a Kane County record $4.7 million dollar wrongful death settlement for the family of a woman killed by a driver operating his truck under the influence of narcotics. This allowed the family to gain some piece of mind, and ensured that the driver was help accountable for his actions.
