Man Charged with Multiple Counts After Drunk Driving Accident Kills One

Drunk driving accidents have become an epidemic, claiming a victim every 90 seconds on average. In fact, if all of the 17 million people who admitted to driving drunk last year populated their own state, it would be the fifth largest in the U.S.. Yes, the problem is big, but it is especially tragic when the car accident victims are children. The Chicago Tribune reported yesterday that a New Lenox man has been charged in the aftermath of a Seneca Township crash that left an Illinois girl dead. She was only four years old. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving)

Just before 10 p.m. on the night of the accident, the man was driving southbound in his 2011 Infiniti when it struck a Jeep Grand Cherokee headed west. Police reported that the defendant failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection, causing his car to slam into the Jeep, which had the right of way. Upon impact, the four-year-old girl was thrown from the car, and was later pronounced dead at Woodstock Centegra Hospital. In addition to the little girl, another woman, a one-year-old, and a five-year-old were also involved in the accident, and were treated for minor injuries.

According to the County Sherriff’s Office, the 43-year-old man was arrested on Friday, and his official charges include one count of felony aggravated driving under the influence, and two misdemeanors for driving under the influence of drugs and driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs. (Chicago Tribune)

Unfortunately, this is all too familiar a story to many of us who follow the news and know that there are thousands of other victims of drunk driving every year. Car accidents continue to be the leading cause of death among young Americans, and about one third of these deaths are directly caused by someone choosing to drive once they’ve had too many drinks. Even with an increase in enforcement, the average drunk driver will drive while intoxicated roughly 80 times before he or she is finally arrested.

Our accident lawyers know that driving safely can significantly increase your chances of getting from point A to point B without incident, but we also know that you can never be fully prepared for the reckless actions of others. Levin & Perconti has served hundreds of clients since 1992, allowing them to receive the compensation they need to deal with their injuries. For instance, our attorneys reached a $2.07 million verdict for a 23-year-old woman whose involvement in a collision left her with multiple fractures throughout her legs. Our client was able to use this money to pay medical bills, make up for lost wages, and transition back to a normal way of life.
