Motorcyclists Among Those at Greatest Risk for DUI Fatalities

Our attorneys know that there has been a great deal of coverage in the news about drunk driving prevention. Organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Century Council have made it their mission to educate Americans of the dangers that come with driving after you have drank too much. With so much of the media focusing on anti-drunk driving messages, it is easy to forget about another extremely dangerous activity…. drunk riding. Although motorcycle awareness month isn’t until May, there are plenty of motorcyclists that are dusting off their bikes for a nice spring ride. Motorcycle sales have been steadily rising in Illinois and throughout the United States, and they don’t appear to be dipping anytime soon, so it is more important now than ever for our lawyers to stress motorcycle safety. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)

Motorcycling has an aura around it, and part of that aura is the wind in your hair, being out in the elements, and having the freedom to zip in and out of traffic in ways that a normal vehicle would never be able to do. However, this thrill comes with a cost, and this is evident in light of the fact that motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to experience a deadly accident on the road than their passenger-car counterparts. Adding alcohol to the mix takes motorcycling from a thrilling and somewhat risky venture to one that is downright dangerous. (

Alcohol affects the skills that are essential to safely riding a motorcycle such as balance, coordination, and reaction time, and statistics have shown that proportionally, intoxicated motorcyclists are involved in fatal crashes at greater numbers than those in vehicles. In fact, among motorcyclists killed in crashes throughout 2010, about 30% had blood alcohol levels of .08 or higher. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)

Organizations catering to the specific needs of bikers have popped up all over the country, like the Bikers Against Drunk Drivers (BADD). Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a campaign to stop impaired driving and educate bikers about what is at stake when they get on their bike after drinking. Our Chicago lawyers have experience handling motorcycle injury cases and know first hand the damage they can create. Victims of these accidents are particularly susceptible to internal injuries, and often struggle with medical bills addressing serious damage to their brain or spinal cord. When serious, these are not the kind of accidents that you can walk away from, and with two-thirds of motor-vehicle injuries already being permanent, motorcycle accidents are no exception.

If you or a loved one have been the victim of a motorcycle accident, or have been injured because of the carelessness of another motorist, it can change your life forever. Our job as accident lawyers is to ensure that this change is minimal for our clients, and we pride ourselves in providing victims with the compensation they need to live a normal life going forward.
