If Punxsutawney Phil is to be believed, spring temperatures will soon be on the way, and that means that people all over the City of Chicago will soon be emerging from their homes to enjoy the warming weather and longer days. With this in mind, our lawyers want to remind you that individuals living in urban populations make up approximately 70% of all pedestrian car accident fatalities nationwide. While it is impossible to totally guarantee one’s safety in the constantly shifting urban environment, following these pedestrian safety recommendations can significantly decrease your chance of becoming a victim. (NHTSA)
Be Alert and Know Your Surroundings-It’s always safest to walk on a sidewalk, but if one is not available and you have to walk on the side of a road, do so facing traffic to allow yourself the opportunity to see oncoming vehicles ahead of time. When crossing a street always use a designated crosswalk when available.
Be Predictable When You Walk-Follow the rules of the road, and obey signs and signals. Cross streets at crosswalks and intersections whenever possible; this is where drivers will expect to encounter pedestrians. If there is no crosswalk or intersection near where you are walking, try to locate a well-lit area where you have the best chance of seeing and being seen by traffic.
Try to Be Visible at All Times-This can be achieved by wearing bright-colored clothing, even during the day, as well as by wearing reflective materials or carrying a flashlight after dark to ensure that you maximize the probability of yourself being seen. Never assume that just because you see a driver, they see you, no matter what time of day it is.
Avoid Distractions While Walking-Despite the fact that this technically falls under the ‘be alert’ category, it is worth emphasizing a second time. Make sure you are alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Look up from your phone so you can react to dangers that may be present. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)
