A trucking accident refers to a collision that involves a large trailer, usually one that weighs in excess of 10,000 lbs. There are roughly 500,000 of these accidents every year in the United States, accounting for one out of every eight traffic fatalities. With revenues connected to the trucking industry totaling well over $600 billion last year, it’s safe to say that we will be sharing our roadways with large trucks for many years to come. With this in mind, our attorneys felt it is important that the citizens of Illinois know their rights when it comes to trucking accidents, and that they know where to turn if they should ever find themselves wrongfully injured. Truck drivers have a tough job. They are often asked to spend many hours behind the wheel, traveling hundreds of miles across the United States in a given day. In the trucking industry, time is money, and this leads many companies to push their drivers and trucks to the limits of safety and beyond in the name of profit. The sad truth is that far too many trucking accident injuries occur because of negligence, and many could be avoided by simply using necessary caution.
Yesterday morning, one such accident claimed the lives of three individuals, including a father and his 10-year-old son. According to a State Police Sergeant on the scene, the father and son were standing outside their parked vehicle after the boy had become car sick while traveling. It’s believed that the semi-truck driver was asleep at the wheel when his trailer struck the mini-van, and the truck continued to travel down the freeway for a short time before colliding with a tree and flipping onto its side. The truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Three additional people inside the mini-van were taken to a local hospital for treatment, but none of their injuries where considered to be life threatening. (ArkLaTex News)
When tragedies like this happen, victims’ lives will never be the same. Our lawyers know that no amount of money can possibly replace a loved one, but when a family member is wrongfully injured or killed we believe that companies and individuals should be held accountable for their carelessness. In a recent trucking accident lawsuit, our attorneys represented the family of a 32-year-old woman who was killed after the pick-up in which she was riding was rear-ended by a semi-truck. The woman’s husband and son both suffered serious injuries in the accident, and turn to us for guidance and representation. Our legal team was able to prove that the defendant driver was operating his tractor-trailer while under the influence, and was driving an overloaded, unsafe truck, and as a result, we were able to secure a $6.5 million settlement for our clients.
