Child safety is a hot button issue for any auto-manufacturer, and rightly so. Motor vehicle accidents are by far the most common cause of severe injury for young kids, and this should be an issue that every parent is concerned with. Perhaps a lesser-known statistic is that car accidents are also the leading cause of childhood-acquired disabilities, such as brain and spinal cord injuries. Yesterday afternoon, a three-vehicle crash near Jackson Park resulted in the hospitalization of several young children and left one adult critically injured. (National Center for Statistics and Analysis)
According to preliminary reports from Chicago police, around 4 p.m. near 67th Street and Blackstone Avenue, a sedan and two minivans collided. Although immediate information on the car accident was not yet available, officials said that one of the minivans appeared to have been broadsided by one of the other vehicles, sending them into the three-car wreck.
Fortunately, the accident happened in close proximity to a Chicago Fire station, and emergency responders were able to quickly help those in need. A Fire Department spokesman said that one adult was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with serious-to-critical injuries, while seven others where taken to other area hospitals in fair-to-serious and good-to-fair conditions. You never want to read about accidents like this, but they happen everyday, and much more than you think. Nearly 250,000 children are injured annually in car accidents, which equates to about 700 kids on any given day. Some of the most common causes of child car accident injuries are:
• DUI-About 20% of children who die in car accidents are riding with a driver who is legally intoxicated.
• Failure to Wear a Seatbelt-Roughly half of all child car accident fatalities cite failure to wear a seat belt as a contributing factor. Failure to wear a seat belt dramatically increases the potential for serious injury.
• Improper Use of Childhood Restraints-According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 70% of the 3,500 child safety restraints which were inspected were being used improperly. This creates a much greater risk to young children, who are still developing internally.
