Every year, about 90,000 individuals are injured while riding a motorcycle. Given their relative lack of size and stability, motorcyclists are afforded a much smaller margin for error than their peers in passenger vehicles; here, even a small ‘trip’ (meaning an event that causes the rider/driver of a vehicle to abruptly lose traction or control) can lead to an unrecoverable loss of control. In many cases, the negligent or reckless actions of one driver can be easily mitigated by other drivers on the road, ensuring that no one gets hurt. Even when a collision does happen, crumple zones, seat belts and airbags are present to minimize injuries and save lives.
However, when careless drivers perpetrate the same negligent actions in close proximity to a motorcyclist, they run a very real risk of becoming responsible for serious traumatic injuries, or in extreme cases, even death. As Chicago motorcycle accident lawyers, we have an opportunity to see the life-changing injuries our clients suffer first-hand; we know how incredibly important it is for victims to secure compensation for their injuries in order to simply make ends meet. Over the weekend, two motorcyclists were severely injured after being involved in an accident with an SUV on 1-294. According to preliminary reports from Illinois State Police, the collision occurred just after 3:00pm near milepost 11. At present all that is known about the accident is that the two victims were traveling northbound on one bike when they hit a black Escalade SUV, causing their motorcycle to flip; the Escalade then fled the scene of the accident. The injured riders were transported to nearby Christ Hospital in serious condition, according to an official statement. (Chicago Sun-Times)
More than half of all fatal motorcycle accidents involve at least one other vehicle, and many additional accidents are caused by riders not being able to react in time to the behaviors of drivers around them. Especially during wet and cold fall weather, poor weather conditions, failing to utilize turn signals, abrupt lane changes, and illegal passing all represent common impetuses for collisions. Whether you are a driver or a rider, it is incredibly important to be cognizant of your surroundings when on the road, and act responsibly to prevent these accidents as best you can.
