Winnetka Accident Highlights Bicycle Safety Tips

One of our Illinois accident lawyers read a recent report about a collision that occurred between a vehicle and a bicyclist in Winnetka, Illinois on Tuesday morning. The accident, states, happened just before the morning rush hour at the intersection of Green Bay and Willow roads. The Deputy Chief of the Winnetka Police Department stated that the driver, a Winnetka resident, was traveling northbound on Green Bay Road while the bicyclist from Glencoe, Illinois was heading southbound. The driver then attempted to head west on Willow Road when he hit the bicyclist. According to the Deputy Chief, the driver of the vehicle was cited for failure to yield, and the bicyclist was transported to Evanston Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

After reading this report, we thought it would be helpful to remind our readers of the steps they can take to avoid serious injury when biking or sharing the road with bicyclists. Every summer, bicycle riding becomes a popular pastime for many families and children. While the activity is generally safe, there are many tips that riders should keep in mind to remain safe and avoid any serious risks. Being sure your bike fits you properly in relation to your height, weight, and age should come first. Be sure all equipment, including tires, brakes, chains, and seat connection, is working correctly. Wearing a helmet and reflective clothing is advised in order to allow motorists to see you while riding on public roadways.

Most importantly, everyone should know and follow the rules of the road. Motorists should always be sure to pass bicyclists at a safe distance, be extra careful when driving through intersections, and to turn and yield properly. Bicyclists should stay alert, ride so drivers and other cyclists can see you, and ride with the flow of traffic. While not every accident or injury can be prevented, remembering these safety tips will help to avoid accidents and prevent serious injury to both motorists and bicyclists.

In the previously mentioned news report, the bicyclist was not seriously injured after the collision. Although the report does not confirm whether the bicyclist planned to seek legal action against the driver of the vehicle, when bicyclists do suffer serious injuries as a result of careless or negligent motorists, they have the right to take action. Through the experience of our Chicago car accident attorneys, the bicyclist may be able to file a claim in civil court against the motorist. If you have been seriously injured, or lost a loved one in a bicycle accident, you can contact our team of Chicago car accident lawyers to learn about what rights may be available to you.
