Very few people truly understand how dangerous it is to drive a car relative to other forms of transportation. In a given year, 6 million car accidents occur in the United States, and this is a high enough number to make automobiles far more risky than airplanes or trains. The unfortunate truth is that many of these accidents should never happen; many of them are avoidable. Of the 3 million injuries that stem from motor vehicle collisions, hundreds of thousands are the result of an individual on the road neglecting their responsibility to drive safely, or simply being blatantly reckless. Earlier this week, a man who allegedly stole an SUV damaged 4 vehicles in total in a desperate effort to flee the scene of a crash. Videos from the scene of the initial collision show the driver of a cab yelling at the perpetrator after he rear-ended the driver’s taxi near the 1400 block of West Belmont Avenue. Despite the cab driver’s attempt to block the SUV’s path, the SUV accelerated, colliding with another taxi, a parked car, and crashing head-on into another SUV before leaving the scene. The driver in question-a 19-year-old young man, slammed his vehicle into a tree shortly thereafter, and was arrested a few blocks away.
According to a police spokesperson, the man responsible for the accidents was charged with multiple counts of leaving the scene of an accident, as well as additional counts of driving without a license, damaging public property, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal trespass to a vehicle, and driving without insurance. However, we also know that there are many people who are irresponsible, negligent, and just plain hazardous on the roads, and the above case is a perfect example of four individuals who had their vehicles damaged because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, near the wrong person. This can mean mounting medical bills and insurance costs, all while being unable to return to work or generate income.
