Technology Trends to Watch—Driver Safety and Crash Avoidance

Last August, the U.S. Department of Transportation conducted another phase of the government’s vehicle safety research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which included nearly 3,000 cars, trucks, and buses. The NHTSA has announced that they will make a decision on the future of this technology later this year, but the future of this system looks bright.

Self-Driving Vehicles-Automation of motor vehicles is a challenging but potentially important method for reducing the risk of accidents on the road. Software systems will likely use a combination of sensors, GPS, V2V, and telecommunications to gather information and intervene in safety-critical situations.
Systems such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and other technologies have scratched the surface of driver assistance, but research continues to be conducted regarding reliability and cyber security of software. This is an exciting thought, but it is likely that it will take quite a while to implement safely and successfully, and as a result, we may not see this become a full reality for many years.
