Whenever a traffic accident occurs, serious injuries are a possibility. However, our years of experience as accident lawyers have taught us that motorcycle accident injuries can be particularly severe, and in some cases, even fatal. Early this morning, an accident on Chicago’s West Side claimed the life of a motorcyclist, closing down the right lane of the Eisenhower freeway for more than five hours.
According to Illinois State Police officials, the crash occurred just after midnight, when a rider collided with the median separating the freeway and a westbound exit at California Avenue. The motorcyclist was rushed to nearby Stroger Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Authorities say they will continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the accident, and will work with the Cook Country medical examiner’s office to determine additional details related to the fatality. While passenger vehicle occupant deaths have dropped significantly since 1975 (21,268 deaths in 2013, compared to 30,601 in 1975), motorcyclist deaths have actually experienced a significant increase (4,381 deaths in 2013, versus 3,106 in 1975). Granted, this statistic may be effected by a nationwide rise in motorcycle ownership, but the fact remains that the very appeal of these machines relies, at least in part, on their untamed nature. Motorcycles are far less stable and far less visible than their four-wheeled counterparts, and without roll cages, steel frames, seat belts or airbags to protect riders, motorcycle accidents often result in serious injury or death. In fact, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that per mile traveled, motorcycle riders are more than 26 times as likely to suffer a roadway fatality as car drivers.
