Car Accidents Abound As Weather Poses Hazards to Drive

As cold weather, mounds of snow, and icy roads descend upon the Midwest, accidents on the highways occur with shocking frequency. All drivers are aware of the challenges posed to road travel when the winter weather appears in full-force, but that awareness does not lead to fewer accidents.

For example, the Joplin Globe reported on several car accidents in its area last week, including one fatality. The first deadly accident occurred on U.S. Highway 69 around 9 a.m. A 39-year old car driver was traveling on the road when her car came upon a stopped dump truck. However, the car was unable to stop, perhaps because of the road conditions, and the vehicle slammed into the back of the truck. The car driver did not survive the collision.

In a separate crash, five people were injured in a single vehicle accede on Interstate 44. T he driver and four passengers were all taken to the hospital after their car skidded off the road, struck a concrete culvert and flipped over.

Earlier a Chicago man was injured when the car he was traveling in ran off the left side of Interstate 44 and struck a median cable guard. Shortly before that two people were injured on Highway 60 when their pick-up truck was struck by another vehicle as it was waiting to make a left turn.

The long list of incidents on the roads is yet another reminded that wintertime traveling can pose very dangerous risks to all. Our Chicago car crash lawyers at Levin & Perconti continue to urge extreme care and caution be taken at all times. It is better to arrive at a destination safe than risk life-threatening injury. Life and death often hinges on simple decisions, like leaving earlier so that there is no reason to speed or making risky winter road decisions. And if you happen to be caught by another driver who does not take care on the roads, please contact a car accident attorney.
