30 people die in the United States every day because of an alcohol-impaired driver. That’s one person every 48 minutes. With more than 10,000 fatalities last year, drunk driving accidents accounted for roughly one third of all traffic related deaths, and left many more injured individuals to navigate the long road to recovery. Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of these accidents is that 100% of them could have been avoided. Every time you go out to the bar, or spend the evening drinking at a friend’s house, you should have a clear plan for getting home safely before alcohol ever touches your lips. Failing to do this puts yourself and everyone around you in danger, and just might cost someone their life. (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)
Last week the city of Belvidere, Illinois was issued a tragic reminder of how quickly one person’s negligence can affect others. Around 9 p.m. Thursday night, Winnebago County deputies pulled over a red pick-up truck on suspicion of driving under the influence. According to reports, while the two deputies were attempting to speak to the man, he fled and was pursued. Before being caught by law enforcement officials, the man struck a pick-up truck, a Ford Escape, and a Chrysler Sebring, killing a woman in the latter. The driver is currently being held at Winnebago County Jail, and faces charges of driving under the influence, aggravated fleeing to elude a peace officer, as well as various other charges.
