For the First Time Since 2005, Auto Accidents Are On the Rise

If you have been reading these blogs long enough then you probably remember reading that driving has been getting progressively safer for the past few years. Well, I won’t be able to say that anymore. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic deaths rose 5.3% in the United States last year, a distinct change following 7 years of successive decline.

One executive from the Governors Highway Safety Association stated that while disheartening, the news was not overly surprising. “With the improving economy and historically low levels of motor vehicle deaths in recent years, we expected deaths to increase.” The preliminary figures from the Federal Highway Administration corroborate their theory, with the number of total miles traveled increasing by 9.1 billion in 2012.

With crash fatalities up in every quarter of 2012, last years total rounds out to 34,080 people lost, many of them because of someone else’s recklessness or negligence. While losing a loved one is incredibly hard, there are millions of other people in our country who are negatively affected by motor vehicle accident injuries each year as well. Three million people are injured in accidents annually, and two million of them will have to live with their injury for the rest of their life. (USA Today)

If you have ever cared for a loved one while they were ill or in the process of rehabilitation, you know that it can be a grueling, demanding, and expensive process. Many of the clients that we work with every day are relegated to a hospital bed, or have been confined to their home by their injuries, relying on the kindness of others to perform day-to-day tasks. It is not uncommon for these people to lose their ability to work, and this is a particularly frightening thought when faced with hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical and insurance costs.

Our lawyers have successfully handled thousands of cases since Steve Levin and John Perconti merged their practices in 1992. We have recovered more than $520 million in compensation for our clients and their families in everything from medical malpractice, to product liability and automotive accident cases. Recently our attorneys were successful in securing a $2.07 million verdict for a 23-year-old woman who had suffered multiple leg fractures as the result of her car being t-boned by an aggressive driver. Together, we were able to ensure that our client was able to pay her medical bills and gave her the knowledge and tools to deal with future complications and expenses.

Every attorney at our firm is committed to serving the great people of the Chicago and Illinois area, and we take pride in bettering the lives of our clients.
